Cabinet Door Wall Art (re-used doors)
We recently purchased our first home from an extremely sweet elderly couple. They took GREAT care of the place... but it looked like it was straight from the 70's, and needed a make-over in a major way. I wish I had a before and after shot... cause it looks WAY different! (YAY ME!) There was a horribly ugly cabinet above the island between my kitchen and my dining room. I didn't want to loose cabinet space... but it just HAD to go! (the hardest part about removing it.. was convincing my husband!)
After painting my kitchen red (my favorite color---EVER!), there was red wall that kept screaming at me "I'm tooo blank!" So... I used the cabinet doors from the cabinets I removed to create this super easy, and simple wall decoration.
I found two super cute fabrics from Goodwill that matched my coffee themed border. (they were actually pillowcases, but I couldn't ever bring myself to use them on my pillow...the thought of my head on drool belonging to someone else grossed me out!) Each pillow case covered two cabinets.. so I could cover four doors.
No one was going to be seeing the actual cabinets... so I didn't take the time to paint them, or prepare them in any way (I also wanted to hurry because I was going to have another baby the following week!).
I stapled my four fabric pieces to the back of each of the cabinet doors, making sure that the material was pulled tight. I didn't pay too much attention to how the back of the cabinets looked since it would be up against a wall and no one would see them. I also didn't bother putting any type of hem on the material since I figured I wouldn't be washing them... and they wouldn't have any traffic to fray the edges.
After all four of the doors were covered, I simply hung them on my wall (there was a ledge on the back of the doors that allowed them to hang by a single nail).
I may eventually try to paint images of coffee cups onto each of my fabric covered doors, but for now I like the contrast between the busy coffee boarder and (mostly) solid colors.
